Thinking about veneers? Start with these questions

Look beyond a smile photograph and understand the proposed changes to your teeth.

Dental Registry editorial · 23 October 2026 · 3 min read

Know what a veneer does

A veneer is a facing placed on the front of a tooth. It may be proposed to disguise a chipped or discoloured tooth. Some techniques involve removing a small amount of tooth surface; others may not. Ask exactly what preparation is planned for each tooth and whether that change can be reversed.

Compare the alternatives

Explain what you would like to change and ask which options could meet that goal. A consultation should cover the condition of your teeth and gums, the expected appearance and the limitations of treatment. A photograph of someone else’s smile cannot establish which procedure is suitable for you.

Think about care after treatment

Ask how you will look after the restorations, what maintenance may be needed and what happens if one is damaged. Request the full treatment proposal before agreeing to a package. Make sure you understand whether the proposed work is veneers, crowns or a combination; those terms describe different restorations.
