The everyday habits that support a healthy mouth

A simple routine to discuss with your dentist or hygienist.

Dental Registry editorial · 23 October 2026 · 3 min read

Make brushing consistent

NHS guidance recommends brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for about two minutes, including last thing at night. Clean the inside, outside and chewing surfaces. For adults, the NHS recommends toothpaste containing at least 1,350 parts per million fluoride; your dental team can advise on your needs.

Clean between your teeth

Ask your dentist or hygienist to demonstrate an appropriate way to clean between your teeth, using floss or interdental brushes where suitable. The right technique and fit matter. Make this part of a consistent routine rather than something reserved for the day before an appointment.

Keep the fluoride working

Spit out excess toothpaste after brushing instead of immediately rinsing with water. If you use a fluoride mouthwash, use it at a different time from brushing. Your own dental team can adapt these general habits around existing dental work, dexterity or individual oral health needs.
